Established in 1924, the refuge spans an incredible 261 river miles from Wabasha, Minnesota to Rock Island, Illinois, preserving over 240,000 acres of rich Mississippi River floodplain. Recognized as both a Wetland of International Importance and a Globally Important Bird Area, it provides sanctuary for countless migratory birds, fish, and wildlife—and a peaceful escape for people, too.
With over 3.7 million annual visitors enjoying activities like fishing, hunting, birdwatching, and more, this refuge is a truly special place to connect with nature.
