Discover the History of McGregor & Prairie du Chien
Step into the past as you explore the unique histories of two remarkable Mississippi River towns—McGregor, Iowa and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

McGregor, Iowa
Founded in 1847 and named after its founder, Alexander MacGregor, McGregor, Iowa is a riverside town with a story all its own. It's important not to confuse the town with McGregors Furniture, a well-known, family-owned business that began in 1896 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Though they share a name, the two are not directly connected.
Today, McGregors Furniture continues its legacy with stores in Marshalltown, Ottumwa, and Waterloo, and is proud to be recognized as Iowa’s oldest family-owned furniture company.

Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin
Just across the river, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin offers another rich historical experience. As one of the oldest European settlements in the Upper Mississippi River region, its roots date back to the late 17th century, when French voyageurs established it as a major fur trading center.
Over time, it also became a strategic military site. Fort Crawford, a significant military post, stood here, and the area played a key role in early American history—including the Battle of Prairie du Chien.
A Shared Heritage
Both towns offer visitors a chance to connect with the stories, people, and places that helped shape the region. Whether you're interested in early settlement, trade, or military history, McGregor and Prairie du Chien welcome you to explore, learn, and experience their enduring heritage.
